Information About Riverview
Riverview is a suburb on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, positioned 9 kilometers north-west of the city’s central business district. Nestled within the Municipality of Lane Cove, it lies on the northern banks of the Lane Cove River, opposite Tambourine Bay. The area is predominantly residential, with Tambourine Bay Park lining its foreshore.
Historical Background
The name “Riverview” reflects its scenic views over the Lane Cove River. A key landmark, St Ignatius’ College, was established here in 1880. Tambourine Bay derives its name from “Tambourine Nell” or “Tambourine Sal,” a woman who once lived in a cave by the bay’s shore while evading authorities.
Demographics
According to the 2016 Australian census, Riverview had a population of 3,354. A majority, 75.2%, were Australian-born, followed by 5.0% from England. English was predominantly spoken at home by 85.5% of residents. Religious affiliations were mainly Catholic (46.4%), followed by No Religion (22.0%) and Anglican (13.1%).
Educational Facilities
The suburb is home to St Ignatius’ College, a Jesuit institution located on Tambourine Bay Road. Designed by J. Dennehy in 1880, the Victorian Classical-style sandstone building deviates from the typical Gothic design of educational establishments. Over the years, it has undergone various extensions and features an observatory and wharf shelter. It is also listed on the Register of the National Estate.
Parks and Recreation
Riverview boasts several recreational areas. Marjorie York Reserve is popular among families, while Tambourine Bay Park and Reserve offer picnic and barbecue amenities alongside a playground. Burns Bay Reserve caters to children’s soccer and provides additional facilities. Smaller recreational spots include a walkway-end area with benches and swings.
Transportation
Busways operates routes 253 to Sydney’s CBD and 254 to McMahons Point ferry wharf. The main road, Tambourine Bay Road, connects the suburb to the Lane Cove shopping district, while River Road West serves as a link to neighboring areas such as Gladesville and North Sydney.
