Information About Willoughby
Willoughby is a suburb on Sydney’s lower North Shore, just 8 kilometers north of the central business district, within the City of Willoughby. Although the city shares its name, the administrative hub is in Chatswood, the area’s main commercial center.
History
European Settlement
The origins of the name “Willoughby” are debated. Some historians attribute it to a parish, while others believe it honors Sir James Willoughby Gordon, commemorated by Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell. Captain Arthur Phillip’s exploration for fertile land led to the establishment of Roseville Chase, where Samuel Bates founded a farm at Echo Point.
By 1871, Willoughby saw developments like its first post office and Pommy Lodge—a small sandstone church building on Penshurst Street. The Laurel Bank Cottage, a historic single-story home, was built in 1884 and now functions as a venue managed by the Masonic Lodge.
In 1920, Telford Lane was constructed using the pioneering techniques of Thomas Telford and remains a rare example in Sydney. The 1934 Willoughby incinerator, a Walter Burley Griffin design, stands as an industrial architectural success and is listed on the (now defunct) Register of the National Estate.
The suburb was notably home to the Nine Network headquarters for 64 years until 2020. The adjacent Channel 9 TV Tower, once Australia’s tallest at 233 meters, began demolition in 2021 to make way for new homes.
