Information About Waverton
Waverton is a picturesque harbor-side suburb located on Sydney’s lower North Shore, just 4 kilometers from the bustling central business district. It’s part of the North Sydney Council area.
A Glimpse into History
The suburb was named in 1929 after Richard Old’s Waverton Estate. Previously, the area was owned by William Carr, who named it after an English village tied to his family roots. The North Shore railway line reached Waverton in 1893, originally serving as Bay Road station before adopting the name Waverton in 1929, following a suggestion from the local progress association.
Before 1916, Indigenous Australians lived in Waverton, leaving numerous cultural sites. These include a large whale rock carving near the heritage-listed Coal Loader, waterholes, and grinding grooves at Balls Head Reserve, as well as engravings in Waverton Park.
Heritage Sites
Waverton boasts several heritage-listed locations:
Waverton Railway Station on the North Shore line
The Coal Loader at the peninsula’s west side, once a coal bunkering station from 1913 to 1917, now a restored heritage site and popular weekend spot
Transportation

Attractions and Recreation
Set along the northern waterways of Lavender Bay, Waverton combines serene bushland surroundings with urban convenience. It’s home to several period-style homes and offers multiple recreational options:
