Information About St Ives.

St Ives is a suburb located on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, approximately 18 kilometers north of the Sydney Central Business District. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Ku-ring-gai Council. Adjacent to St Ives is St Ives Chase, a separate designated suburb situated to the west and north.

Historical Background

The area of St Ives was initially explored in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip and his team, who set up a campsite near what is now Hunter Avenue. Historically, the region supported a small timber industry, with notable trees still present in the nearby Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve and Canisius College. Although once known for its apple orchards, residential development has since ended commercial fruit farming. During World War II, troop presence spurred the construction of Archbold Road as an emergency route to the city. Since 1950, St Ives has grown from its shopping hubs and main roads to include areas bordering the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Garigal National Park.

St Ives Post Office started operations on November 10, 1885, and the first public school opened on May 6, 1889. Initially, development was slow due to its perceived distance from the city. However, growth picked up in the late 1890s with market gardeners, a small dairy, and orchard workers settling in. Post-World War II saw rapid expansion, with more families moving in.

Today, St Ives is considered a safe and affluent suburb, with a median weekly household income of $2,888, significantly higher than the state average.

Commercial and Recreational Areas

St Ives Shopping Village, established in the 1960s, hosts over 110 stores, with major tenants including Harris Farm Markets, Coles, and Woolworths. Opposite the shopping center is Village Green, a park featuring sports fields, tennis courts, and a skate park. The park is also the venue for the annual Festival on the Green.
