Information About Roseville.

Roseville is a suburb on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, located 12 kilometers northwest of the central business district, nestled within the local government areas of Ku-ring-gai and Willoughby. It’s distinct from Roseville Chase, a separate suburb to the east.

History

Bancroft Avenue represents a historical slice of Roseville, with postcards from 1900-1927 showcasing its early days. Among Ku-ring-gai’s initial European settlers was William Henry, who utilized the land for farming, including fruit orchards and market gardens. David Mathew, with his property Clanville, and Richard Archbold, who was granted 600 acres next to Clanville, were significant figures in the area. Archbold’s orchard and his son-in-law’s “Rose Villa” influenced the naming of Roseville, coinciding with the arrival of the North Shore railway line.

Roseville Post Office began operations on July 8, 1901, followed by Roseville East Post Office on December 1, 1937. Babbage Road commemorates Eden Herschel Babbage, a prominent retired banker associated with local developments like Roseville Park. The area also has connections to the photographer Harold Cazneaux and former NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell.

The Suburb

Roseville, the southernmost part of Ku-ring-gai, is primarily residential, featuring medium to low-density housing. It lies between Findlay Avenue and Ashley Street to the south, with its northern boundary formed by Bayswater Road, Abingdon Road, Chelmsford Avenue, and Carnarvon Road. The eastern and western edges are marked by Middle Harbour and Lane Cove National Park, respectively. Roseville Chase is defined by Babbage Road and Middle Harbour, with Warringah Road running through it.

Architecture

Roseville is renowned for its verdant streets and higher-than-average property prices. Near the railway station, homes often display Federation and Californian bungalow styles, while outer areas reflect developments from the 1940s and 1950s. Some older homes have been replaced by new properties, sparking discussions about heritage listing due to the area’s architectural significance. The former Commonwealth Bank’s art deco building stands out along the Pacific Highway.

Education

The suburb hosts Roseville Public School and Roseville College, catering to students from kindergarten through high school.

Infrastructure and Community

Roseville railway station is part of Sydney Trains’ North Shore line, accompanied by a small commercial hub nearby. The suburb is appreciated for its lush green parks, including Kimo Street Bush, Lower Blue Gum Creek Bush, Loyal Henry Park, and others. Important community landmarks include several churches, such as St Luke’s Presbyterian Church and Roseville Uniting Church. St Andrew’s Anglican Church, with a foundation stone laid by Archbishop H.W.K. Mowll in 1935, is another highlight.

The historic Roseville Cinema on Pacific Highway, noted for its art deco facade, has evolved from a community center to a modern cinema over the decades.

Demographics

According to the 2021 census, Roseville’s population stands at 10,340, with a median age of 40 years. A significant portion of residents are children under 15 or adults over 65. More than half the population was born in Australia, with notable communities from China, England, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Malaysia. English is the primary language, though Mandarin and Cantonese are also spoken. Religion-wise, many identify with no religion, followed by Catholic and Anglican affiliations. The median weekly household income is $3,200, with housing predominantly stand-alone homes, followed by apartments.
