Information About Kirribilli.
Kirribilli is a prominent suburb located just three kilometers north of Sydney’s central business district, known for its affluence and historical significance. Situated on the Lower North Shore of Sydney Harbour, it falls under the administration of the North Sydney Council. It also hosts Kirribilli House, one of the official residences for the Prime Minister of Australia.
History
The name Kirribilli originates from the Aboriginal word “Kiarabilli,” meaning “good fishing spot.” Another theory suggests it derived from “Carabella,” named after an early colonist’s home. Initially developed near Jeffrey Street on land granted to James Milson, Kirribilli has gradually transformed from native bushland to a bustling residential area. The suburb features Victorian terrace houses and 20th-century apartments, with prominent early landowners including the Campbell, Jeffrey, and Gibbes families.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area saw commercial use, including a significant wool warehouse. The opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932 further spurred development, connecting Kirribilli directly to the city center.
Population
According to the 2016 Census, Kirribilli had a population of 3,820. A majority of residents were born in Australia, with common other birthplaces being England and New Zealand. Most residents speak English at home, and the predominant religious affiliations are No Religion and Catholicism. Despite being densely populated, the area has a notable number of inactive dwellings.
Landmarks
Kirribilli is rich in heritage, with several buildings listed on the Register of the National Estate, including Kirribilli House, Admiralty House, and the headquarters of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Historical structures like the Admiralty House date back to 1842, showcasing the area’s colonial past.
Transport
The suburb supports the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and is well-connected by train, bus, and ferry services. Milsons Point railway station is the nearest train stop, providing easy access to the CBD and surrounding areas. Several ferry wharves offer additional transportation options.
Commercial Area and Community
The area features a modest shopping strip near Milsons Point railway station and hosts the popular Kirribilli Markets monthly. It is home to notable schools such as St Aloysius’ College and Loreto Kirribilli, alongside various churches and the Ensemble Theatre, Australia’s oldest professional theatre company.
In summary, Kirribilli is a suburb that blends historical charm with modern convenience, offering a vibrant community for its residents and visitors alike.
