Information About Killara.
Killara is a charming suburb located on Sydney’s Upper North Shore in New South Wales, Australia. It sits approximately 14 kilometers north-west of the Sydney central business district, within the Ku-ring-gai Council’s jurisdiction. With a population of 10,620 as of the 2021 census, Killara boasts a comfortable density of 2,181 people per square kilometer. The suburb spans an area of 4.87 square kilometers and is situated at an elevation of 120 meters.
Historical Background
The area of Killara has rich historical roots dating back to the early 19th century. Initially inhabited by convicts and their overseers in 1805 for timber-getting activities along the Lane Cove River, the first official land grants were issued in 1821 by Lachlan Macquarie. The suburb’s name, Killara, which means “permanent” or “always there” in the Aboriginal language, was chosen when the railway line was inaugurated in 1899.
Cultural and Heritage Significance
Killara has maintained its reputation as a “Gentlemen’s suburb,” historically devoid of commercial ventures. The suburb is home to several heritage-listed sites, including the renowned Harry and Penelope Seidler House on Kalang Avenue and Woodlands on Werona Avenue. Marian Street Theatre, currently under renovation, played a pivotal role in the cultural landscape of the North Shore.
Transport Links
Killara is well-connected through its own train station, which provides access to the T1 and T9 lines. These routes offer convenient travel options to Berowra via Gordon and the City via Gordon. Additionally, the suburb is serviced by two bus routes, 556 and 565, operated by CDC NSW, which connect Lindfield, East Killara, Chatswood, and Macquarie University.
Educational Institutions
The suburb offers excellent educational facilities, including Killara Public School, Beaumont Road Public School, and Killara High School, known for its high performance among non-selective government secondary schools in New South Wales. Although no longer operational, the private Abbotsholme College once counted two future prime ministers among its pupils.
Community Spaces
A notable feature of Killara is the Swain Gardens, a beautiful garden space donated to the Ku-ring-gai Council by Mr. Swain in the 1920s. These gardens are lovingly maintained by the council and volunteers and have been recognised by the National Trust of Australia for their significance.
Killara remains a tranquil and sought-after suburb, known for its rich history, cultural significance, and strong sense of community.
