Information About Hunters Hill
Hunters Hill, located 9 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s central business district, is a suburb in Northern Sydney, New South Wales. Serving as the administrative hub for the Municipality of Hunter’s Hill, it’s situated on a peninsula between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers and accessible by bus or ferry.
Historically known as ‘Mookaboola’ or ‘Moocooboola’ by the Aboriginal people, meaning ‘meeting of waters,’ Hunters Hill was named after John Hunter, the second Governor of New South Wales. Settlement began in 1835, notably by Mary Reibey, Sydney’s first female retailer. Many early homes, including those built by Frenchman Didier Numa Joubert using local sandstone, reflect the suburb’s rich history.
In the early 20th century, Hunters Hill hosted an industrial area with a radium and uranium refinery operating from 1911 to 1915. Although now residential, the suburb retains heritage-listed sites like Vienna, The Garibaldi, and Kellys Bush Park, among others.
Demographically, the 2016 census recorded a population of 9,528, with most born in Australia and speaking English at home. The area boasts a high median household income and is one of Australia’s wealthiest suburbs.
Notable residents have included actress Cate Blanchett, cricketer Josh Hazlewood, and property developer Lang Walker. Politically, Hunters Hill is part of the North Sydney federal electoral division and the Lane Cove state electoral district.
Transportation includes several bus routes and nearby ferry services offering access to Sydney’s larger transport network. Commercially, Hunters Hill has small shopping areas, with a main commercial hub near the intersection of Ryde Road and Gladesville Road.
Educational institutions include St Joseph’s College and several primary schools, while churches like Villa Maria and St Peter Chanel add to the community’s cultural fabric.
Recreationally, Hunters Hill hosts one of Sydney’s oldest tennis clubs and the Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club, which participates in the New South Wales Suburban Rugby Union.
