Information About East Killara

East Killara is a tranquil suburb situated on the Upper North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is 15 kilometers north of Sydney’s Central Business District within the Ku-ring-gai Council area. To the east, it is bordered by Garigal National Park, and to the west by Eastern Arterial Road and Birdwood Avenue. Killara, a neighboring suburb to the southwest, shares the 2071 postcode with East Killara.

Nestled in serene bushland, the main thoroughfare in East Killara is Koola Avenue, stretching from Birdwood Avenue to Albany Crescent.

History

The name “Killara” is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning “permanent” or “always there.” East Killara was officially recognized as a separate suburb on August 5, 1994.

Population

According to the 2021 census, East Killara had 2,895 residents. Of these, 43.1% were born in Australia, with significant populations from China (19.4%), Hong Kong (6.4%), England (4.3%), Malaysia (2.4%), and South Korea (2.0%). At home, 43.3% spoke only English, while other prevalent languages included Mandarin (21.8%), Cantonese (15.9%), Korean (2.6%), Persian (1.3%), and Japanese (1.2%). In terms of religion, 49.6% reported “No Religion,” followed by Catholic (13.9%), Anglican (10.2%), and Buddhism (5.5%). The suburb boasts a high median weekly household income of $3,005, compared to the national average of $1,746. Almost all residences (99.5%) were separate houses, with an average household size of 3.2 people.
