Information About Castle Cove
Castle Cove is a suburb nestled on Sydney’s lower North Shore in New South Wales, Australia. Just 11 km north of Sydney’s central business district, it falls under the City of Willoughby’s local government area, positioned on the western side of Middle Harbour.
History
The Cammeraygal people of the Guringai nation inhabited the area until the 1820s, with a presence in northern Sydney for about 5,800 years. Castle Cove likely got its name from the estate of Henry Hastings Willis, a notable New South Wales Parliament member.
In 1858, Dr. H. G. Alleyne made the first land purchase in the area. By 1878, most land on the peninsula had been sold. Andrew Armstrong acquired much of it in 1886, forming the Cammeray Estate Land Company, which later went into liquidation in 1893. In 1903-04, the Willis family constructed “Innisfallen Castle” after purchasing 21 hectares from Dr. Alleyne on a default mortgage, using the land for light farming.
From 1956 to 1970, Castle Cove was developed by Headland Developments and Hooker-Rex Estates, with the Hooker Corporation taking a significant interest in the Greater Sydney Development Association in 1958.
Around 1985, the Willis descendants attempted to subdivide the land around the Castle for townhouses and transform the Castle into a wedding venue. However, Willoughby Council rejected the rezoning and business operation proposals. Consequently, the Castle was sold at a public auction for approximately $4 million.
