Information About Avalon
Avalon Beach is a northern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, located 28 kilometers from the central business district. Part of the Northern Beaches region, it falls under the Northern Beaches Council. Initially known as Avalon, the name changed to Avalon Beach in 2012 during regional boundary updates.
History
The area, originally inhabited by the Garigal or Caregal people, was part of Guringai country. European settlers named Avalon after a mythical island from Celtic mythology, famed as King Arthur’s paradise and resting place.
John Farrell received the first land grant of 60 acres here in 1827. In 1833, Australia’s first Catholic priest, John Joseph Therry, was granted 1,200 acres, covering the peninsula from Newport to Whale Beach. Though he intended to establish a settlement, it didn’t materialize. After his death, his land was sold to fund the reconstruction of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney. In the 1920s, the area was known as “Priest’s Flat.” Arthur J Small subdivided the land in 1921, naming it Avalon, selling lots for £100 each along with a two-year golf club membership.
During the 1920s, significant housing developments occurred. Architect Alexander Stewart Jolly designed several heritage-listed homes in the area, including Loggan Rock, Careel House, and Hy Brasil. Walter Burley Griffin’s sandstone cottage, known as Wickham, was demolished in 1994.
In 1950, architect Harry Ruskin Rowe developed Ruskin Rowe as an estate with covenants to preserve its character. Despite some neglect over time, the estate is heritage-listed for its historic and environmental significance.
